Principal's Report

Professional Practice Day, Parent Teacher Conferences, Staff Recruitment, Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion survey - Monday 29 July to Friday 30 August 2024, Scholarship Program - Year 7 intake 2024.

We have completed the first five weeks of term and are just finalising the subject selections for all students for 2025. It is pleasing to see the excitement building for students, and they see the independence they are now experiencing in their future decisions. These students are being guided through this process by the careers team, their teachers, and coordinators, and hopefully, they are seeking input from family and friends. It is a very exciting time when they are making choices around potential future careers.

Professional Practice Day

Next Wednesday 21 August, the College will be holding a Professional Practice Day. Students will not be required at school.

Professional Practice days provide teachers with release from their scheduled duties (all duties which would have been otherwise scheduled, including teaching) to focus on the improved delivery of high-quality teaching and learning.

The work undertaken on these days will be consistent with departmental and school priorities and selected from the following areas:

  • planning
  • preparation
  • assessment of student learning
  • collaboration
  • curriculum development
  • relevant professional development
  • peer observation including feedback and reflection

Parent Teacher Conferences

It was pleasing to see so many parents engaged in meetings with their teachers. These conferences are a great opportunity for partnerships to be strengthened between students, parents and teachers on focusing on improving the learning outcomes for students. Feedback from staff was that they really appreciated the opportunity to engage with families and felt there has been an improvement in effort and attitude from certain students.

Staff Recruitment

I would like to welcome Rebecca Wynn, who will join the school next week as a beginning Maths teacher. The school looks forward to Rebecca joining the NGSC staff.

Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion survey - Monday 29 July to Friday 30 August 2024.

We’re conducting a survey to find out what you think about our school, titled “Your School, Your Say”

Please take note of the following information:

The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey, previously known as the Parent Opinion Survey, is an annual survey provided by the Department of Education and Training.

This year the Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey will be open online from Monday 29 July to Friday 30 August 2024.

This survey gives schools the opportunity to gather feedback from parents, caregivers, and guardians about our school community. Its purpose is to help schools understand how families perceive school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement.

The results of the survey will be used by our school to guide future planning and improvement efforts. Roughly 30 percent of parents will be selected to participate this year. All responses to the survey will be anonymous. If you are selected, the school will notify you and provide all the necessary information and support to complete the survey online at home or at school.

The survey will be conducted online, takes only 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, or smartphones at any convenient time during the fieldwork period. It will also be available in languages other than English, including Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi, and Greek.

Your family might be randomly chosen to take part in the Parent Opinion Survey this year. If you are selected, your opinion is important, so please take the time to complete the survey as honestly as possible. Your participation matters to our school community.

Thank you for your support. If parents, caregivers, or guardians have any questions or concerns regarding the Parent Opinion Survey, please feel free to contact the school and speak to Ms. Leanne Scarlett.

Students will continue to be provided with a safe nurturing environment, which focuses on providing opportunities for students to develop their social and emotional capabilities. Staff will select year levels to work with and this will help develop strong relationships over time and support students to develop their individual identity and reach their goals. We aim to further cultivate young people with the resilience, independence and confidence to fulfil their potential. More information regarding the structure of the program will be provided later in the year.

Year 7 Immunisations

Year 7 students will be receiving their immunisations from Barwon Health. Students are to wear sports uniforms. Parents are encouraged to ensure they have completed the immunisation forms that have been posted on Compass.

Course Counselling/Careers weeks

Year 10 students, during Week 3, completed their Careers Week which concluded with their subject selections and choosing their Senior School pathway. For the first time, an information night for students and parents was held at the beginning of the week explaining the intricacies of subjects, pathways and language that will appear over the next two years. This was a big success, and we will look to continue this session in years to come.

The following week, Year 9 students had their subject selections which included participation in the Geelong Tertiary Futures Program. The students were excited to have more selections to choose from in Year 10 and can start to map their strengths and interests more closely with the subjects they enrol in.

2025 Year 12 Jumpers, Subject selections, Practice Exams – September Holidays, Graduation Tickets.

We are halfway through Term 3 and there is a lot happening in the Senior Sub School to prepare students for the end of year celebrations and formalities that are to come.

Although the end of the year is near, now is not the time to become complacent in your studies and revision. Remember to get enough sleep each night and consume nutritious food throughout the day to fuel your body and brain. Manage your time well and continue to go over the content for all your subjects to make revision more manageable as we approach exam time.

A reminder that your attendance is as important as ever for the remainder of this term. If you are not in the classroom learning, the expectation is you will contact your teachers and catch up on work missed to ensure the best outcomes in your education. If you are unable to attend school due to illness, please contact our attendance officer and provide a medical certificate with the correct days of absence upon your return to school.

Staff are busy preparing exams and revision material for students to ensure they are given the best opportunity to achieve their best at the end of the year. The exam timetable will be shared via Google Classroom for students in the coming weeks. Any concerns with exam times or clashes need to be forwarded onto Mr McDougall to make an alternative time for you to complete your exam.

Year 9 News, Year 10 News, General News

Term 3 is well and truly underway. We are happy to see that the students are working hard in their classes and making good choices around the school. This term has been a busy one, with various activities for the Year 9 and 10 students. I look forward to working with the Year 9 and 10 students over the next three weeks.

Year 9 News

The Year 9 students have been very busy with careers week in Week 4. They have completed various modules, facilitated by staff from The Gordon, to help the students with their future planning. This, along with the students participating in careers and their course counselling, will allow the students to start thinking about the pathways that they would like to take, for their future career.

Weeks 5 and 6 also have some exciting activities that the Year 9 students will be taking part in. In week 5, the students will be participating in a full day Life Changer program, designed to, once again, help the students with their mental health and career pathways. In week 6, the Year 9 students have another full day program, with the Geelong Tertiary Futures Program. This is an exciting opportunity for the students to engage in education that provides and in-depth preview of a broad range of tertiary studies.

Year 10 News

The Year 10 careers week kicked off in Week 3. It was great to see so much engagement and participation from our Year 10 students. This week helped the students further decide on their pathways that will lead them to their future careers. The course counselling took place on Thursday and Friday, where most of the students were able to discuss what their future plans were. Students who were not able to attend should go and see the careers team or speak to the coordinator to book in a time.

Week 5 has an exciting guest speaker coming to speak to the Year 10 students. The Pat Cronin Presentation is all about empowering young people to stop violence. We are looking forwards to the students taking away some valuable strategies to put a stop to violence.

General News

The Middle School Beyond Boxing Program has been a huge success, with many positive reviews from the students that have participated, as well as the facilitators, developing the students social and mental wellbeing.

Week 4 was the Parent/Teacher Conferences. It was great to see so many families engaging positively and attending. If you were not able to make the Parent/Teacher Conferences, and you would like to know how your child is progressing in their classes, then you can contact the teacher directly.

Wednesday 21 August, there is a Professional Practice Day for staff at the school. This is a student free day.

Hockey Report

On Tuesday 23rd July, our senior Hockey team went out to Geelong Hockey Centre in Corio to compete for the Geelong region title they had narrowly missed out on in 2023. The boys were excited to be taking to the field to prove that their skills and consistent training and improvement, as well as their close friendship, was what was needed to make it to the Western Metro Division Finals. They played 3 fantastic matches. They drew against Grovedale SC 2-2, beat Lara 13-0 and Northern Bay 6-0. Having scored the most goals of the day, our boys won the pennant and celebrated our victory with some take-away lunch afterwards and some winning anthems. Our leading goal scorers were Rafael 7, Lorne 4, Brad 4, Alex 3 and Hudson, Aaron and Gus with 1 each.

A week later, on the 31st of July, we battled it out against some of the best teams in Melbourne and did respectably well. Although we lost our first two games, 4-0, to Strathmore SC and Maribyrnong Sports Academy, we regrouped and enjoyed wins on our next two games against Suzanne Cory HS and Footscray HS, finishing the day off on a high. Considering we were the only school that had no students who currently play field hockey, we did extremely well. I am proud of the boy’s commitment and behaviours they displayed while representing our school on both days. Well done and congratulations!

The Girls team played Northern Bay in their first match. While the competition was close, Northern Bay won 2-1. The second match against Grovedale was more successful and North Geelong won 3-0 to finish second place in Pool 2. This meant that North Geelong now had to play the winner of pool 1 in the semi-final which was Oberon High School. This match was a close competition, but the girls won this to meet Northern Bay again in the final. A flying start in the final saw North Geelong win 2 of the first three sets. The second sets were close, and a win would see the girls emerge as Geelong Champions. Northern Bay won by the smallest of margins forcing a third and deciding set. A few points either way and the result may have been different however North Geelong were defeated by Northern Bay to come runners up.

The Boys encountered Northern Bay 2 in their first match. A 3-0 victory here set up a second-round match against Bellarine. Bellarine were undermanned with one player short, so they needed to win both of the “live” matches to progress. North Geelong was too strong and ended up finishing the top of pool 2 with a 3-0 win. North Geelong defeated Grovedale in the semi-final setting up a competitive match against Northern Bay 1 who finished the top of pool 1. Northern Bay 1 had a strong team, and the final was not as close as the girl's competition. Again, just like the girl's competition Northern Bay defeated North Geelong 2-1.

All our students represented the school positively demonstrating a high level of sportsmanship. The runners up results in both competitions was also very pleasing. A highlight of the day was Brock Ince and Shannon Kilgower who finished the day undefeated.

Well done to all team members.

International Student Short Study Tours

Group #1

An amazing experience for our International Student Short Study Tour (Group # 1), from Dongyang Middle School in China who visited our College for one week from 21st to 27th July 2024. Their experience was quite memorable as not only did they enjoy our curriculum and the excursion showing the magnificent sites around the regional area but made wonderful friendships with our students at the College. The students really enjoyed the subjects of English, Maths and Humanities and all of the teachers were so interactive with the students, that made it even more special to all of the International Students and their teachers.

Group #2

Another amazing experience for our International Student Short Study Tour (Group # 2), from Hangzhou Middle School in China who visited our College for one week from 29th July to 3rd August 2024. From trying to teach the Cockatoo “hello” in Chinese at mini golf to feeling the sand between their toes and seeing blue sky was a highlight on the planned excursion. Both the students and teachers of the Study Tour expressed their deepest gratitude to the staff and College students as they made our visitors feel so welcomed and special when joining their classes. The experience was not only memorable but their next visit was promised to be longer.

NGSC Connects with Hama Elementary School

On June 24, NGSC’s Year 7D students connected via Zoom, with Hama Elementary School in Izumiotsu, Osaka. Hama Elementary School has a vibrant English language program and passionate students. Hama Elementary School graduates often attend NGSC’s Sister Schools in Izumiotsu; Toyo Junior High School, Ozu Junior High School, and Seifu Junior High School, and later Izumiotsu High School.

This a was a fantastic experience for everyone involved. For our Year 7 students, who had started learning Japanese at the beginning of Semester 2, only a week before, it was a chance to connect the language they are learning this semester to communicating with other students close to their ages.

The Hama Elementary School students put a lot of work into preparing some questions for our students in English, and our students tried their very best to ask the Hama Elementary students questions using scaffolded sentence builder sheets. It was great to see everyone so happy when students on both sides realized that they liked similar things like soccer, anime, and eating.

Our students reflected on the experience at the end of the session, and I would like to include some quotes:

  • “It was fun and funny.”
  • “I liked how they all spoke to us.”
  • “It was very interesting.”
  • “It was very interesting and cool.”
  • “It was fun to talk to other students from another language.”
  • “I think Monday was good and amazing.”

We look forward to building stronger connections with students in Izumiotsu City.

It is great to see our students connecting with Japanese culture outside of the ‘classroom’.

We will be conducting a variety of activities over the rest of the term, so come over and have a go.

A big thank you to Matt Plunkett (1994) from Buxton Real Estate, who gave up his time to guide our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Women's Group through the intricacies of renting and buying a house. With the aid of interpreters, he outlined the steps involved and how important it is these days to be proactive, particularly in the highly competitive rental field. His knowledge was invaluable as he reassured the group of their rights as a tenant. Matt was happy to share his experience and welcomed the challenge of assisting the CALD community in their desire to rent or purchase a home.

Last week was Careers Week for our Year 10 students. They undertook explorations into various careers options, went on a visit to Victoria University and participated in an alumni session before attending course counselling interviews to choose their subjects for 2025. Five alumni presented their pathways since leaving NGSC as well as sharing words of wisdom with regard to life after school. A big thank you to:

  • Martin Salazar (2022) - studying a double degree in Law and Cyber Security at Deakin Uni. He is also in the Army Reserve after completing a gap year with the ADF
  • Nathan Saunders (1994) - after initially pursuing an AFL career, was trained as a carpenter and is now the Victorian Trade Manager for Modus Projects, a company providing service excellence in the fields of facilities maintenance, building, project management and fit-outs
  • Tammy Matchett (1992) - Senior Claims Officer, City of Greater Geelong. Tammy left school at the end of Year 10, but sent a message to the audience about the importance of continually learning
  • Bianca Terry (2009) - Human Resources Manager, Prepared Foods Plant, McCain Foods
  • Dennis Richter (2006) - Commercial Manager, IXL Metal Castings, a long-established Geelong firm that supplies high quality metal casting to various industries.

The annual Rap Battle and Talent Quest was held on Friday 9th August. Judges were alumni Fiston Baraka (Baraka the Kid) and Lionel Baker, both accomplished musicians in their own right.

After much discussion the prize-winners were:

3rd place – with an original rap – Wyatt Keith

2nd place – with a great display of dancing – Benny Baraka

1st place – with a crowd-pleasing rendition of ‘Jailbreak’ – Patrick Ivey

Careers News

Year 9 Careers

Year 9 students have now entered the second phase of completing the state-wide Careers Morrisby Profile. Students have had the opportunity to complete an online profile that asks a series of questions to identify their interests, strengths, learning styles and skill sets.

Students are then completing a session with a Careers Practitioner who shares the data collected by the Morrisby profile to identify then discuss subject selections for Year 10 and potential careers pathways. Students and parents will receive more information to support subject selection during Term 3.

During Term 3, Year 9 students will have three single day excursions which are part of "The Geelong Tertiary Futures Program". This program is at both Gordon campuses. Students will complete five different half day tasters over weeks 6, 8 and 9 which they have selected. This program allows students to experience several different careers in the environment where these courses are delivered.

Please find below a brief snapshot of the ways we support our students.

Furthermore, we ask that if you, or someone you know, is in a position to assist our students by offering work experience, please contact us so we can help facilitate such a rewarding experience.

  • Self-awareness and the desire for self-improvement – Curiosity is big thing all employers say they are looking for. They don’t expect you to know it all, but they want to see a drive to learn.

So how do you capture the attention of an employer?

Why are you unique? What can you offer that no one else can? We all have Unique Selling Points or USPs (in digital marketing terms). Name your top three strengths then ask a parent, friend or former employer to do the same. For example, you may be efficient, outgoing and driven. Think of examples in your personal life where you have illustrated these strengths and spell them out using examples.

YOU MUST have a Resume. Employers offering apprenticeships and traineeships accept that you may have very little paid work experience, but you do have skills. Perhaps you are the captain of your sporting club, or you are coach of a team, completed a pre-apprenticeship, studied tech or hospitality at school, worked at your dad’s company in the holidays or learned how to construct things. Include achievements such as awards or projects you managed at school. It could simply be that you worked part-time for a year to go on a school trip, which shows you have determination.

Be creative with your skill set.

Present well. Dress well and look clean and tidy even if you are in your school uniform. Presentation also includes ensuring there are no spelling or grammar mistakes in your resume. This is especially important to show you have a keen eye for attention to detail.

Be enthusiastic. Enthusiasm is so important in apprentices!

Someone who is enthusiastic, energetic and passionate creating products will get employed. Remember, while you may not have a lengthy resume, you might be surprised by how much you can truly offer.

Employers also value a young person’s initiative to pick up the phone (yes actually talking) and have a conversation with prospective employers.

Stay off your mobile during business hours!

Might be obvious, but Snapchat, Instagram, Tik Tok.... CAN ALL WAIT!

The one thing the Head Start Coordinators hear from frustrated employers; “They are always on their phone.”

Check it at appropriate times during breaks, but other times show some initiative during slow periods and clean, restack, clean a work vehicle – this is the thing that will impress.

What makes doing an apprenticeship so worthwhile?

Learning in a practical setting is invaluable. Not only do you get to develop skills in a practical environment, but you’re surrounded by experienced professionals that you can learn and draw inspiration from. An apprenticeship goes beyond the theory and provides you with skills and experience that will set you up for a career that you may have never been able to access otherwise.

Finding yourself the right apprenticeship isn’t always as difficult as you may think, talk to your Careers Teacher about how Head Start can help you present well to employers.

If you’re a student looking for a pathway into employment, a parent looking for a secure future for your child, or an employer looking for your next apprentice, contact the Careers and Pathways Team about the Head Start Program!

The upcoming Apprenticeship and Traineeship Forum, hosted by Skilling the Bay in collaboration with Workforce Australia Local Jobs (Barwon) and The Gordon, promises to demystify the apprenticeship and traineeship pathway.

We invite you to share this fantastic opportunity with your students and parent/carer community through the school newsletter or other pathways.

Accessing Centrelink

Accessing Centrelink can be difficult. Below are a couple of links that will help.

The first link is to information about Youth Allowance for students:

https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/youth-allowance-students-and-australian-apprentices

The links below provides information for those who have been affected by Covid-19:https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/subjects/affected-coronavirus-covid-19

Students who would like to access the Centrelink Interpreter Service can call 131 202 and will need to state their preferred language twice. This service can also provide students with their CRN (customer reference number) over the phone which will enable them to apply for payments.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS

FUND (CSEF)

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are a part of a healthy curriculum.

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student is:

  • $150 for primary school students
  • $250 for secondary school students

HOW TO APPLY

New applicants should contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from the website below.

If you applied for CSEF at your child's school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.

You only need to complete an application form if any of the following changes have occurred:

  • new student enrolments: your child has started or changed schools this year.
