North Geelong Secondary College has been running the Human Powered Vehicle Program since the 1990's and is the only school in Geelong to offer such a program.
Each year a group of North Geelong Secondary College students compete in an endurance race. We run a junior and a senior team. Students in the junior team compete in the triathlon where they complete time trials, an obstacle course and an 8 hour endurance race, while the senior team competes in a 24 hour endurance race. Both teams also complete a design and construction presentation and under go trike scrutineering.
The Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) program is made up of a team of students who race recumbent tricycles.
North Geelong Secondary College students attend weekly training sessions prior to competing in the 24 hour Maryborough Energy Breakthrough event which occurs in late November. At training students develop teamwork skills as well as their physical fitness and learn about the construction and assembly of the trikes they race. During the event, students present a showcase of their understanding of renewable energy sources and the trikes they race.
During the race many teams record hundreds of kilometres travelled and can go at speeds of up to 60km/h. Students race teams from all across Victoria and interstate. We are incredibly proud of our Human Powered Vehicle Team with team members each year bringing something new to the wider college community through their involvement in both the team and the leadership they exemplify.
