A big thank you to Matt Plunkett (1994) from Buxton Real Estate, who gave up his time to guide our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Women's Group through the intricacies of renting and buying a house. With the aid of interpreters, he outlined the steps involved and how important it is these days to be proactive, particularly in the highly competitive rental field. His knowledge was invaluable as he reassured the group of their rights as a tenant. Matt was happy to share his experience and welcomed the challenge of assisting the CALD community in their desire to rent or purchase a home.

Last week was Careers Week for our Year 10 students. They undertook explorations into various careers options, went on a visit to Victoria University and participated in an alumni session before attending course counselling interviews to choose their subjects for 2025. Five alumni presented their pathways since leaving NGSC as well as sharing words of wisdom with regard to life after school. A big thank you to:

  • Martin Salazar (2022) - studying a double degree in Law and Cyber Security at Deakin Uni. He is also in the Army Reserve after completing a gap year with the ADF
  • Nathan Saunders (1994) - after initially pursuing an AFL career, was trained as a carpenter and is now the Victorian Trade Manager for Modus Projects, a company providing service excellence in the fields of facilities maintenance, building, project management and fit-outs
  • Tammy Matchett (1992) - Senior Claims Officer, City of Greater Geelong. Tammy left school at the end of Year 10, but sent a message to the audience about the importance of continually learning
  • Bianca Terry (2009) - Human Resources Manager, Prepared Foods Plant, McCain Foods
  • Dennis Richter (2006) - Commercial Manager, IXL Metal Castings, a long-established Geelong firm that supplies high quality metal casting to various industries.

The annual Rap Battle and Talent Quest was held on Friday 9th August. Judges were alumni Fiston Baraka (Baraka the Kid) and Lionel Baker, both accomplished musicians in their own right.

After much discussion the prize-winners were:

3rd place – with an original rap – Wyatt Keith

2nd place – with a great display of dancing – Benny Baraka

1st place – with a crowd-pleasing rendition of ‘Jailbreak’ – Patrick Ivey

The Alumni Program at NGSC has been very successful over the last few years. Here’s a snapshot of the impact from semester 1, 2024.
